What is the Ship all about?

img_20180316_130411Many people have asked me this question and now i am ready to answer in my own words.

First, Mercy Ships is an international Charity.

Also, it is the largest non governmental hospital ship in the world.  It provides humanitarian aid such as; free health care, community development projects; community health education, mental health programs, agriculture projects and Palliative care for terminally ill patients.

Mercy Ships has operated in more than 57 developing nations and 18 developed nations around the world, with a current focus on the countries of Africa.

Our vision statement is Bringing Hope and Healing to the less privilleges

The ship consist of about 400  volunteers crew members coming from 40 different nations all over the world serving and following the model of JESUS CHRIST.

The ship made a great impact in my life and in the life of the Cameroonians during its previous field service as i witnessed the life of people changed with surgery.

Patients who were once rejected and stigmatized regained their values.

Patients who were blind could see due to the Free surgery they received, I saw the hopeless regained hope, the weak became strong, joy was restored in the life of many.

The ship is a place to be and i am so grateful unto God who has made it possible to be part of this great vision.

We are currently in Guinea for another life changing experience as many lives will be transformed.

Mama Fanta is now able to lift her hands, smile, clothe herself and show her arm without hiding it with a piece of cloth or fabric thanks to Mercy ships!

Her self esteem has been restored!!

God’s Amazing ways’ Jeremiah 29:11′

God’s plans are the best because He knows the times and the seasons, He knows what’s best for you and that’s what HE has done for me!

It all started like a joke because i wasn’t serious to apply since i had a job. A friend gave me the application form and then encouraged me to apply which i did.  Some weeks later i resigned from my job and this is where my journey begins!  On the Saturday of the week after i resigned, my phone rang and i noticed several missed calls and so i decided to check who called but it was an unknown number. Then after a while my phone rang again but this time i was able to answer the call and this was a call from Mercy ships telling me to come for an interview which i did then some weeks later i was called and told i have been accepted to work on the ship as a day-crew in Screening. My job was to translate from English to French to the patients and From French to English back to the Nurses But my goal was to learn from the nurses and the Surgeons as i translated BUT God had planed something for me from the foundation and HE made me walk in HIS plans gently. While working as a translator, i began to learn from the nurses in my team and also, began getting interested in screening.

In November 2017 my supervisor called me to the cafe area of the ship and these were her words ” Christel, i have been hearing good reports of you from the tents and also in the team, i think you’re a good nurse and among the rest of the day-crew you’ve distinguished yourself and then she asked, would you like to join us in the screening team and become a screening nurse in Guinea? Surprised and amazed i didn’t say a word but i smiled and tears ran down from my eyes. I came back to her with a reply of yes! after which i had prayed with my pastor and seek Gods will, i was convinced it was HIM talking to me and making a way for me where the seems no way! And that was how i changed from being a day-crew to crew on this big surgery ship called MERCY SHIPS.
